The Bullock smithy public house was built in 1560 by Richard Bullock.  It later became the Bullock Smithy with the area soon adopting the name.

The pub is still there to this day, located on the corner of Torkington Park and the A6.

The residents of the suburb began to tire of the jokes and humour surrounding the name and as a result, in 1835, it was decided that the village would be renamed. In 1836, the village was renamed ‘Hazel grove’.  The name ‘Hazel Grove’ had been used for nearby areas, such as, an area named Hassel Grave near High Lane and an area near Poise Brook which was locally known as Hazel Grove.

Hazel grove is one of the most sought after postcode areas within Greater Manchester.

The A6 road runs straight through the suburb, running from London to Carlisle.

The A6 also links Hazel Grove to its neighbouring town and city, Stockport and Manchester.
