Broadbottom is a small village located in Tameside, Greater Manchester. The town stands on the River Etherow which forms the border with Derbyshire.
During the 14th century, there was a water powered corn mill in the town and during the 18th century, Moss mill, a woollen mill which later changed to a cotton mill in the 19th century. One remaining mill still stands in Broadbottom, the mill sits next to the River Etherow and is named ‘Lymefield mill’. A row of 18th century weavers’ cottage still stand at Summerbottom.
Best Hill mill opened in 1784 until its closure in 1884. The mill reopened during the early 20th century to manufacture tape and webbing for us during World War I.
Hodge print works began as a woollen mill in 1798. It was later converted to a dye works in 1805 which produced high quality dyed cloth.
What was known as ‘Broad mills’ were a collection of mills including a calico printing mill which during the 1840’s ran 25,000 spindles and 1,500 looms.
