Prior to Droylsden becoming a part of Greater Manchester, the town was popularly known as the ‘silly country’ by Mancunians. The story behind the name is ‘Once a year, during an annual carnival, some of the town’s folk would bring a pig and sit it on the wall to watch the passing entertainment with them. Converted from a farm in 1978, The Pig on The Wall public house takes its name from this story.
The town lies to the east of Manchester city centre and grew as a cotton mill town, situated along the Ashton and Peak Forest canals.
In 1851, the first machine woven towel in the world, the terry towel was produced in the town by W.M.Christy and sons of Fairfield mills. A towel was brought back for Turkey which Christy’s managed to copy on an adapted loom. The Royal Turkish towels became famous, with Queen Victoria having a regular order. The mill was closed during the 1980s and today, a Tesco stands in its place.
The population of the town grew rapidly as a result of it being an overflow housing area for the city of Manchester.
