Atherton lies to the North-West of Manchester City Centre and is a town located within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan. The towns name is thought to derive from ‘a farmstead or a village of a man name Aethelhere’ which was an Old English personal name and the suffix ‘tun’ which means an enclosure, farmstead or manor estate.
For around 300 years, dating as far back as the 17th century, Atherton was referred to as Chowbent, which was frequently shortened to ‘Bent’ which was the town’s old nickname.
At the start of the 20th century, Atherton was described as the centre of a district of collieries, cotton mills and iron works. The area has been linked with coal mining and nail manufacturing since the 14th century.
