A Metropolitan borough of Wigan, Leigh lies to the south east of Wigan. The town is historically a part of Lancashire and was once the entre of an ecclesiastical parish which covered six townships. In 1875, three townships, Pennington, Westleigh and Bedford merged and Leigh became the official name for the town.
Leigh was originally an agricultural area known for its dairy farming, domestic spinning and weaving which later led to the development of the silk and cotton industry in the 20th century. The town’s industrial history can be seen today in its red brick mills. Several large multi-storey cotton mills which were built along the Bridgewater Canal still stand, a reminder of the towns textile industry.
The name of the town derives from the Old English word ‘Leah’ which means ‘place at the wood or woodland clearing, a glade and subsequently a pasture or meadow’. The name refers to the town’s rich meadows and pasture land and the product of its dairies, including the Leigh cheese, known for its excellence.
Towards the end of the 16th century, spinning and weaving started to develop in to the town. It is a tradition in the town that a local man invented the ‘Spinning Jenny’ and water frame in the 1760’s. These improvements meant that hand loom weavers were in extremely high demand.
