The Metropolitan Borough of Tameside lies east of Manchester City Centre. Derbyshire lies to the east, the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham lies to the north, the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport lies to the south and the City of Manchester lies to the west.
The towns within the Borough grew rapidly within the cotton industry during the Industrial Revolution.
The Borough was formed in 1974 and is administered by Tameside Borough Council. Deciding on a name for the new Borough proved troublesome. The Redcliffe-Maud report had used the name ‘Ashton-Hyde’ but this was deemed unacceptable as double barreled names were prohibited for newly formed districts. It is believed that if ‘Ashton under Lyne’ had been the County Borough, it may have been chosen as the name but the other districts of the Borough objected to this. In total, 30 name suggestions were put forward with Hartshead being the most popular until the name ‘Tameside’ won at the final voting stage.
