Heaton Moor forms a part of the ‘four Heaton’s’ along with Heaton Mersey, Heaton Chapel and Heaton Norris.
Situated in Stockport, Greater Manchester, the suburb is characterised by its Victorian buildings which were built between 1852 and 1892 and its tree lined streets which follow the field patterns of what was once an agricultural economy.
The area is an affluent area, with it having an equal residential status during the Victorian Era as Alderley Edge and Bowden. To date, areas in Heaton Moor are a conservation area, including the roads of Clifton Road and Mauldeth Road, which make up what is locally known as ‘Millionaire’s Row’.
The land where Heaton Moor is situated is flat with no rivers or streams with black soil which represents its previous peat moor. The area’s tree lined streets and the building line which is set well back in from the streets give the impression to many people that there is a lot of open space which is not the case.
Prior to the opening of the Railway station in the area, Heaton Moor was agricultural land which formed a part of Heaton Norris. The land was home to pigs and cattle. Evidence of the area’s agricultural background can be seen in the names ‘Shaw Farm, Shaw Fold Farm and the road names ‘Shaw Lane, Shaw Fold Lane and Heaton Moor Lane’. The opening of the railway station saw the development of the area with street and buildings being planned. A cinema opened in the area in 1923 but later closed in 2006 due to low audiences.
