Littleborough lies within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale in Greater Manchester and lies by the foot of the South Pennines. The town was once a hamlet in the manor of Huddersfield, parish of Rochdale and Hundreds of Salford during the middle ages.
The towns name ‘Littleborough’ is of Old English origin ‘Lytel bruh’ which means a ‘small fortified place’ or ‘lytel broc’ which means a ‘small watercourse’.
Littleborough began to develop with the introduction of the cotton industry when cotton was the base of making textiles. Littleborough became an affluent area for many families. Large textile mills, coal mining and engineering all contributed to the growth of the town and helped to seal its status as a mill town.
Prior to this time, Littleborough consisted of a chapel, a few cottages and an inn. Its residents were mainly farmers who weaved wool for people who travelled between the markets at Rochdale and Halifax.
At the end of the 18th century, the summit gap between Littleborough and Walsden was considered to be the best way over the Pennines for the Rochdale canal and the Manchester to Leeds railway. Hollingworth Lake was built to the south side of Littleborough which was used to regulate the canal waters.
The town’s main tourist attraction is Hollingworth Lake, where a number of water sports take place. The lake was known as ‘The weighvers’ seaport’ and spans over 118 acres, there are a number of outdoor attractions, including, play areas, picnic areas, nature trails, guided walks, boating and a nature reserve. The lake’s banks also over a number of activity centres, including, windsurfing lessons, sailing, water sports, mountain biking and climbing, giving visitors of all ages things to do. The streets around the lake consist of a number of cafes, pubs and restaurants, making it the perfect day out for the entire family. Hollingworth Lake has become one of the most popular destinations in the area for visitors from near and far.
