Londendale lies in a valley, to the North of Glossop. The name of the town means ‘long wooded valley’. The area marks the boundaries between the two counties of Derbyshire and Greater Manchester.
The River Etherow flows through a chain of six reservoirs which are known as the ‘Londendale’ chain. These include, Woodhead Reservoir, Torside Reservoir, Rhodeswood Reservoir, Valehouse Reservoir, Bottoms Reservoir and Arnfield Reservoir. The six reservoirs have a combined capacity of 4,200 million gallons.
Since the Middle Ages, a packhorse route named as ‘Saltway’ was maintained in the area to allow the exportation of salt from the Cheshire Wiches of Nantwich, Northwich and Middlewich across the Pennines.
The importance of the salt trade can be seen in the surviving place name, Salter’s Brook, which is where the Saltway forked, one route leading to Wakefield and the other route leading to Barnsley.
The first railway line was constructed in Londendale in 1839 and 1845. The three mile long double Woodhead tunnel was the longest tunnel in the country for some time. The track was removed in 1986 and now the area where the railway lay, forms a part of the Trans-Pennine Trail.
