A market town lying in the South of Trafford, Altrincham was established in 1920.  The town is historically a part of Cheshire, its name derives first appears as ‘Aldringham’ which is thought to mean ‘homestead of Aldhere’s people’.  As recently as the 19th and 20th century, the towns name has been spelt as ‘Altrincham’ and ‘Altringham’.

Altrincham was established as a market town at a time when the economy of most areas was of an agricultural nature rather than of a trade nature.  Altrincham grew with the extension of the Bridgewater canal to the town in 1765 and the arrival of the railway in 1849.  The canal stimulated the development of market gardening and Altrincham became known for its vegetables.  Warehouses were built along the canal at Broadheath by 1767 which began the steps for developing Broadheath into an industrial area and the start of Altrincham’s industrialisation.  In 1776, the canal was connected to the River Mersey providing a water route to Manchester and the Irish Sea.

With the arrival of the railways, Altrincham and its surrounding area became desirable places to live amongst the middle classes and commuters.  Broadheath’s industrial area was founded in1885 and by 1900 it had its own docks, warehouses and electricity generating station.  Many companies were attracted to Broadheath as a result of its proximity to the Bridgewater canal, railways and road links.

Along with Sale, Stretford and Urmston, the town of Altrincham is one of the four major urban areas in the Trafford district.
