Blackley was once a major hub for the Chemical industry.  Today, it boasts beautiful green spaces, which includes, Heaton Park, Blackley forest and Boggart Hole Clough.

The town was originally a rural village which lay to the North of Manchester City Centre.  It later became an urban are due to mass house building during the 1930s.

The name of the town derives from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘Blaecleah’ meaning ‘dark wood’ or ‘dark clearing’.

The land of Blackley was often leased by the Lords of Manchester until 1473 when John Byron held the leases.  The land was held by the Byron family until the 17th century when the land was sold in sections.  A small village, Blackley had fewer than 110 residents by the middle of the 17th century.

In 1785, a French industrialist named Louis Borelle opened the Borelle Dye works, the first dye works in Blackley.  This was followed by a second dye works which was opened by Angel Raphael Louis Delaunay.  The dye works was named the Delaunay dye works and was famous for their ‘Turkey Red’ dye.  Ivan Levinstein, a noted chemist, bought the dye works in 1865 following Delaunay’s death and the facility expanded under the Imperial Chemical Industries.  The company went on to employ a huge number of people, many in Chemical Research.  Many medical breakthroughs were discovered in the Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) laboratories.
