Bowden is a village situated in Trafford, Greater Manchester.  The area is an affluent area, joining the likes of Hale, Wilmslow and the towns of what is known as the ‘Cheshire Golden Triangle’.

The towns name derives from the Anglo-Saxon ‘Boga-Dun’ which means bow (weapon) and hill (curved hill).

Bowden includes Dunham Massey, both of which are named in the Domesday Book, mentioning the existence of a church and a mill in Bowden and Dunham Massey as ‘Doneham: Hamo de Mascy’.

Bowden began to develop in the 1840’s.  Landowners began to sell parcels of their land.  The railway station followed with its opening in 1849 and provided a major commuter route from the village to the centre of Manchester, making the area much more attractive to developers.  Terraces and Semi-Detached houses were originally built in the town but by the 1860’s and 1870’s “merchant princes” had begun building much larger houses along Green Walk.  These houses were a defining feature of the town and still are to this date.  The area was described as being “studded with handsome villas and mansions”.
