The town’s name of Bredbury is of an Anglo- Saxon origin and most likely dates back from its first permanent settlement.  The area of Bredbury is a suburban town located within the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, reaching from the southern slopes of Werneth Low, an outlier of the Peak District between the valleys of the River Tame and River Goyt.

Bredbury’s first mention in the Domesday Book was brief, being named for having several acres of land and its only occupants being a duck and a sheep.  The town’s value was listed as three pounds.

The main road running from Bredbury to Cheshire played a major part in the transportation of salt.  During the 17thcentury, there was around 12 smithies in the Bredbury area, as a result of the number of craftsmen needed to show the packhorses which moved along the road through the village.   The town grew during the industrial revolution when cotton mills were built.  The mills relied on water power which was provided by the River Mersey and the Peak Forest Canal.  The town is home to extensive areas of countryside in the valleys and at the slopes of Werneth Low.

The area is home to Bredbury Hall, a popular hotel and nightclub.  The history of the Hall is unknown but the myth is that the Ghosts of the old manor still roam the hallways of the club at night.
