Cheetham Hill lies within the inner city area of Greater Manchester.

The area of Cheetham Hill is one of the most culturally diverse areas of Greater Manchester.

Its streets are lined with many fruit and veg stalls, takeaways, clothing shops, churches, mosques and synagogues.

As a result of several waives of immigration into the UK, Cheetham Hill has a multi-national community.

Cheetham Hill saw heavy industrialisation during and following the Industrial Revolution. During the early 20th century, the area had a large Jewish population in its southern end with a recorded nine synagogues.

A Jewish migrant named ‘Michael Marks’ lived in Cheetham Hill with his family.  In 1893, Michael, along with a man named Thomas Spencer, opened the first ‘Marks and Spencers’ store on Cheetham Hill Road.

By 1901, the company’s first headquarters had been built and opened on Derby Street.

During the period of Manchester history known as ‘Madchester’, the narcotic trade grew and during the 1980’s, a gang war had begun between 2 rival gangs, the Cheetham Hill Gang and the Gooch Close Gang.  Manchester gained a reputation for gun crime and was nicknamed ‘Gunchester’ and the ‘Bronx of Britain’.

The area is home to the Manchester Transport Museum and the Irish Heritage Centre.
