The City of Salford/Metropolitan Borough of Salford forms one tenth of the ‘Metropolitan’ areas of Greater Manchester. Formerly the County Borough of Salford, it was granted city status in 1926
The city includes;

The city is named after its largest settlement, Salford.
The City is administered from the Salford Civic Centre.
The Metropolitan Boroughs of Bolton, Bury and Wigan lie to the west, north and northwest of the City and Manchester city centre lies to the west. It is bounded by the River Irwell to the south east and by the Manchester Ship Canal to the south.
The City is heavily industrialised and populated with one third of the city being rural open space.

Salford City Council was created to administer the new city. And until 1986, it shared powder with Greater Manchester County Council.
