Denton is a town in the Borough of Tameside and lies to the east of Manchester City Centre.  The name derives from Dane-town, an etymology supported by other place names in the area, for example, Danehead-bank and Daneditch-bourne,  The word ‘Dane’ originates from the Anglo Saxon’s meaning ‘Valley’, therefore, Denton, means ‘Valley Town’

Denton is historically a part of Lancashire, and gained supremacy in felt hatting towards the end of the 19th century. Denton and Haughton became centres of the production of felt hats, in 1800 there were four hatting firms in Denton and Haughton which grew to twenty five hat manufacturers by 1825.  This made Denton the third largest hat making centre in the North West.  By 1840, over 24,000 felt hats were manufactured in Denton per week.  A wide range of hats were manufactured in the area throughout the 19th and 20th century.  The hats included silk hats, fur hats, soft hats, stiff hats, wool hats, straw hats and the cloth cap.  Denton Hat Company introduced the famous ‘Attaboy’ trilby hat in the 1930’s.  In 2003, Wilson’s Hat Factory on Wilton Street was demolished along with the mill-workers’ houses and other factories to make way for a new retail shopping park, now known as Crown Point North.

Two well-known slogans arose from the town, ‘if you want to get ahead, get a hat’ anyone attending a job interview who didn’t wear a hat was quickly shown the door and until the early 20th century, anyone entering a shop in Denton without wearing a hat received much cursing.  The term ‘mad as a hatter’ also arose in Denton, as a result of the mercury used in the felting process leading to mercury poisoning.
