Dukinfield is a town situated on the Cheshire plain, where it meets the Pennines, Dukinfield is the first town on the hill.  The town was originally a part of the parish of Stockport until 1974 when it was amalgamated into the newly formed Borough of Tameside.  Its name means ‘open land of the ducks’ and originates from the Old English words of ‘duce’ and ‘field’.

The area developed as a result of the industrial revolution when it became the site of coal mining and cotton manufacturing.   The cotton trade massively helped to shape the town but at the same time it also destroyed the town’s former pasture and meadow land.  By 1794, two cotton mills were built in the area and by 1825 this number had increased to 7 mills.   The industry continued to grow and by the 19th century the number of mills in the area had risen to 14.  The mills varied in size, with some of the larger mills having four or five storeys and large windows, engine houses, ornamental towers and brick built chimneys.  Coal mining also played a significant part in Dukinfields’ industrial history.  Astley Deep Pit was developed in 1874.  The colliery’s’ downcast shaft was 2058 feet deep and its workings extended over a mile to the south and 1300 yards to the north.  The coal mine was at the time, thought to be the deepest coal mine in the world.
