Lying within the Metropolitan Borough  of Bolton, Greater Manchester, the town lies on the Rivers Irwell and Croal and sits South-East of Bolton City Centre.

The towns name derives from Old English ‘Fearn’ meaning ‘a fern’ and ‘worth’ meaning ‘an enclosure’.  The town name suggests that is was originally over run with ferns.

The town became a centre of coal mining during the 18th and 19th centuries.  The first coal pits were dug in 1611 and by 1848 there were 20 recorded pits in the area.  The underground canals which were built underneath Farnworth were used to transport the coal from Farnworth to Worsley.  The underground canals were built during the early 19th century.

The collieries of Farnworth formed a part of the Worsley Navigable Levels.  The underground canals of the Worsley Navigable Levels stretched from the Worsley Delph’s to the Bridgewater canal.  T.B. Crompton owned the Farnworth paper mills, who contributed to papermaking in 1821.  The Crompton mill was one of the earliest paper mills to be built in Farnworth.
