Gatley is an area in Stockport, Greater Manchester.  The area was formerly known as Gateclyve, an Old English word which means ‘a place where goats are kept’.  Gatley is the most westerly area of Stockport, running along the borders of both Stockport and Manchester.

Before the turn of the 20th Century, the majority of Gatley’s residents worked in either the material trade industry or were farmers.

During the 17th and 18th century, Button making was a significant local trade.  A ‘Button man’ was first recorded during the 1660’s.  This continued throughout the 18th century, with three button men being mentioned in the area between the years of 1735 and 1779.  In 1750, the factory was built near to Gatley Hall by William Roscoe.  The factory was used as a place for hand-weaving and was later converted into a farmhouse.

The majority of the residents of Gatley were hand loom weavers and became dependant on the textile manufacturing industry.  The growth of machinery in industrial manufacturers during the 19th century put the textile industry in the area in to decline.  Prior to the turn of the 20th Century, the majority of Gatley’s residents still worked in either the material trade industry or were farmers.

Built in the 1930’s, the Tatton Cinema was a centre piece in the town.  Remains of the Tatton cinema still stand in the village, with only the front façade standing.
