The town of Golborne lies in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, 14 miles west of the City of Manchester.  The name ‘Golborne’ derives from the Old English words ‘Golde’ and ‘Burna’ meaning ‘a stream where marsh marigolds grow’.

The town grew in the farming and agriculture industry and the mining and textile industry.  Many farms in the town still belong to the families of who originally owned them.

During the Industrial Revolution, the town grew into a coal mining industry.  In 1979, a methane explosion in a colliery in the town killed 10 miners.  The colliery was closed in 1989.  The closure of the colliery lead to huge unemployment rates in the town.

The manor of the town was held by the Lords of Lowton and the Golbornes.  Holcroft farm was the home of Colonel Blood, who tried to steal the crown jewels during the right of King Charles II. The hall is today a farm.
