A suburban town, Handforth lies between the towns of Wilmslow, Heald Green and Style, Cheshire.

The town of Handforth was originally named ‘Handforth cum-bosden’ and for many years it fell under the parish of Cheadle.  The name itself is thought to derive from the Saxon ‘Hanna’s ford’, when they were crossing the River Dean.

During the Second World War, Handforth, along with its neighbour, Cheadle Hulme, was home to a large part of RAF Handforth.  RAF Handforth was opened in 1939 as a maintenance unit, classed as a universal stores depot.  The depot stored and dispatched a number of items, including, knives and forks to aircraft engines.  The only surviving buildings on RAF Handforth to date are the government pay offices, which stand adjacent to the total fitness gym.

Handforth Hall is the oldest building in the town, a Tudor style black and white timber building.  The hall was built in 1562.

The town acquired its coat of arms during the Crusades.  The coat of arms displays the Hanford Star which originated from Henry de Hanford, who, whilst battling in the crusades, painted a silver star on his black shield. The star was drawn after Henry saw a star fall from the sky during a night attack.
