A town in Greater Manchester, Hyde is historically a part of Cheshire and became a Metropolitan Borough of Tameside in 1974. The town is separated from Denton by the River Tame. Hyde includes several areas and suburbs, including, Gee Cross, Newton, Hattersley, Godley, Flowery Field, Kingston, Mottram in Longdendale, Hollingworth and Broadbottom. The name derives from the ‘Hide’ meaning a measure of land for taxation purposes, originally taken to be the area of land which was necessary to support a peasant family and in later times, taken to be the equivalent of 120acres of land.
The town of Hyde is home to one of Tameside’s oldest buildings, the cruck framed 13th century Newton Hall. The town Hall stands in the market place. Its large bell in the clock tower is known as Owd Joss (Old Josh, which was named after Joshua Bradley, a poor child worker in the mills. The clock chimes the Westminster Quarters.
In the 1960’s, Myra Hindley and Ian Brady were arrested in their home on the Hattersley Estate, Hyde after the body of 17 year old Edward Evans was found in their house by police. The couple were found guilty of murdering Edward and two other children whose bodies were found buried on Saddleworth Moor. They later confessed to the murder of two other children. Dr Harold Shipman, Britain’s most prolific serial killer had his doctors surgery in Hyde, where he murdered hundreds of victims. The first known victim was murdered on 7th August 1978 and the last victim was on 24thJune 1998.
