Irlam is one of the furthest reaches from the City of Salford and borders both the towns of Cheshire and Warrington.  The name ‘Irwell’ is thought to take its name from the nearby River Irwell, with its previous name being ‘Irwellham’.  The town has some of the few remaining farms in the city.  A town anciently known as irwellham and was an outlying area of Chat Moss, a large peat bog which straddled the River Irwell.

The town was an undeveloped area until the railway station arrived in 1873.  The manufacturing of steel was the village’s main source of employment for the majority of the 20th century.  The Partington Steel and Iron Company opening the first steel works in the town in 1910 and later became a part of the Lancashire Steel Corporation and later again, became a part of the British Steel Corporation.  Kingsland Wine and Spirits is the largest independent wine bottler in the UK and operate from their 35 acres premises which are based in Irlam.
