A large village in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Littlelever was once a coal mining area but today is mainly a residential area.

The earliest recorded pit was built in the 14th century.  The majority of the town’s population was employed in the town’s cotton mills, paper mills, coal works and bleach works during the 19th century.

Its name, Lever, derives from the Old English word ‘ Llaefre’ which means ‘a  place where the rushes grow’ and Little, which derives from the towns recorded name ‘parua lefre’ which is Latin for ‘parva’ which means ‘little’.

During the 1800s, the coal mining industry had spread through little lever and its neighboring areas and by 1880, there were 10 working pits in the Littlelever area.  The Manchester, Bolton, Bury canal passed through Littlelever where two basins were used to load the coal from Ladyshore colliery.  The pit was closed in 1949.

The manufacturing of Terracotta took place at Colonel John Fletchers lad shore terracotta works.  The lady shore coal and terracotta company supplied the terracotta which was used to build the church in Littlelever.

The 3 arms of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal made the area an ideal place for refreshments and lodgings on days when the canal was in use. A small boat building industry was created to cater for the transportation of coal from the town.
