An ancient market town nestled at the edge of the Peak District; Macclesfield is historically a place of industry with a rich tradition in silk manufacturing.  The town has striking buildings and picturesque countryside.  With its own unique identity, the town is characterised by a rural/urban blend, reflecting on its market town heritage.

With its hills, cobbles, silk and festivals, Macclesfield is an intriguing place to visit.  The town offers its visitors a mix of independent and unique shops, events, bars, cafes and restaurants.

The residents of Macclesfield are often referred to as a ‘Maxonian’. Situated in the ‘Hundred of Hameston’ the name Macclesfield is of an Old English origin ‘Maccel’ and ‘field’ meaning Maccel’s open country. The traditional nickname for the town is Treacle Town, though Silk town is the much preferred nickname for the town. Its nickname of Treacle Town came from an incident where a horse drawn wagon overturned, spilling its load of treacle onto the street.

Macclesfield was once the world’s biggest producer of silk and in 1832 there were 71 silk mills operating in the town. To date, Paradise mill is a working mill museum, which shows the public the art of silk throwing and jacquard weaving.  Hovis the bread makers was founded by a Macclesfield business man and a baker from Stoke on Trent, with the town being the original home to the bread makers.
