Lying at the foothills of the Pennies, Chadderton is a town in the south-east of Lancashire. The town is situated on the edge of the Lancashire coalfield and is drained by the River Irk. Its name derives from Caderton which is believed to be a combination of the Celtic word ‘Cader’ or ‘Cater’ symbolising ‘a fortified place in the hills’ and the Anglo Saxon suffix ‘tun’ referring to a settlement
Chadderton is a former cotton town, which once employed thousands at its British Aerospace factory, which famously built the Avro Lancaster Bombers. The factory was built in the south of the town between 1938 and 1939 and was one the largest employers in the area. During the Second World War, 3,050 Avro Lancaster Bombers were built at the factory, which accounted for over 40% of the Royal Air Forces fleet. The Avro Vulcan was designed at the factory along with the Avro Shackleton and the Avro Lincoln. Avro later became part of BAE Systems and began producing commercial aircraft for Airbus and Boeing
Chadderton is historically a part of Lancashire. The town’s history is marked by its status as a manorial township, with its own line or lords and overlords. The main industry of the town was farming, with many locals supplementing their incomes by hand-loom woollen weaving. The expansion of the town came during the industrial revolution and with the developments of the textile manufacturing. By 1914, the town had more than 50 cotton mills. The towns industrial past remains in its landscapes of red-brick cotton mills, some of which are now used as warehouses or distribution centres and others which are listed buildings due to their architecture, historical and cultural significance.
