Suburb of Stockport, Heaton Mersey lies in the Northern Border of the Town. The area is joined by Heaton Moor, Heaton Chapel and Heaton Norris to form the ‘Four Heaton’s’. Heaton Mersey consists mostly of a residential area with a part of it being a designated conservation area.
The area lies along the banks of the River Mersey, a few miles from Stockport town centre. The River Mersey acts as a boundary between Heaton Mersey and the North of Cheadle. The area is also bordered by Heaton Moor, Heaton Norris, Didsbury and Burnage.
The Cheshire Plain can be seen from the top area of Heaton Mersey Park. The River Mersey lies at the bottom of the park along with the spot where the Heaton Mersey Bleach works once stood. Mersey Vale reserve and 2 ponds can also be found within the boundaries of Mersey Park.
Out of the ‘Four Heaton’s’, Heaton Mersey has the largest amount of open space. The railway arrived in the area in January 1880 with the line running from Cheadle Heath to Manchester Central. The station closed in July 1961.
