The name of Audenshaw derives from Aldwin, a Saxon personal name and the Old English Suffix ‘shagh’ which means ‘woodland’. During the middle ages, Audenshaw was a division of Ashton, Lancashire.
Audenshaw is a town in Tameside, lying on the River Tame. The earlier name of the Town was Aldwinshagh.
Before the industrial revolution, Audenshaw’s main occupation was that of farming. The town later joined its neighbouring town of Denton in the hatting industry, the manufacture of cotton, silk and calico printing, with the majority of the town’s residents being employed within these industries.
