An area of Tameside, Greater Manchester, Hattersley lies 10 miles east of Manchester city centre.
Hattersley was historically a part of Tintwistle Rural District, Cheshire until 1974. The area is the site of an overspill estate which was built during the 1960’s by Manchester City Council. The estate became the home to many families rehoused from other inner city areas.
In 1964, the Moors murderer, Myra Hindley and her grandmother were re-housed in Hattersley from Gorton. They lived at number 16 Wardle Brook Avenue. The address is where Myra Hindley and Ian Brady carried out the murders of their victims, 10 year old Lesley-Ann Downey and 17 year old Edward Evans. The house was demolished in 1987.
