Hollingworth is a small village which lies in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside in Greater Manchester.
The village’s name originates from the Old English words of ‘Holegh’ meaning ‘holy’ and ‘woro’ meaning and enclosure. Its name is given to a family who owned the majority of the surrounding land prior to the Norman Conquest. Hollingworth Manor is an ancient manor which was occupied by a single family, the Hollingworth’s, for over 700 years. During this period, Lords of the Manor assumed the name of their manor as their surname. The ancient arms of the family are three holly leaves.
An ancient religious site known as ‘Wedneshough Green’ was located in Hollingworth. A grassy knoll lying opposite from the Gunn Inn was anciently named ‘Wedenshaw or Woden’s Hawe, named after the pagan god Woden.
Due to heavily wooded and dangerous forests, Hollingworth, along with the manors of Mottram, Matley and Tintwistle appear to of been wilderness prior to 1211.
